The 8th International Conference 'GEM - 2024 (Global Energy Meet)' held in Los Angeles, California, USA, from 4 to 6 March 2024, discussed topical aspects and prospects for the development of alternative energy sources.

It is widely acknowledged that alternative energy is becoming an increasingly important aspect of the future of mankind. The depletion of traditional energy sources like oil, gas, and coal, along with their harmful effects on the environment, has made the pursuit of clean energy sources a top priority for the global scientific community.

At the GEM-2024 conference, researchers from different countries presented their papers and discussed methods for generating, storing, and utilising hydrogen energy, solar energy, and biofuels. The report by Bolatkhan Kazykhanovich, Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor, Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan, on 'Biotechnology of hydrogen energy production on the basis of cyanobacteria' was particularly interesting. It emphasised the importance of this area of research.

Regular interaction with the world's leading scientists is crucial for the development of Kazakhstan's scientific potential. It is positive that, at the behest of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Ministry of Science and Higher Education is undertaking extensive work across various programmes and projects. The advancement of science is only achievable through the implementation of innovative projects that address new global challenges. Kazakhstan's scientific community actively fosters favourable conditions for introducing innovative ideas and publishing research results in internationally recognised scientific publications, including those listed in the Scopus and Web of Science databases. This is accomplished not only through the efforts of national scientific centres but also by establishing close ties with leading scientific organisations and researchers.

As part of the GEM-2024 conference, Bolatkhan Kazykhanovich visited the Centre for Hydrogen Research Facility at the University of California, Los Angeles, to learn about the latest scientific developments in this field.

He plans to hold meetings with professors from the Laboratory of Microbiology and Plants at the University of California, San Francisco to discuss prospects for cooperation, the development of new research areas, and the training of students in PhD and Master's programmes.
