Vice-President of the National Academy of Science
Professor Dos Sarbasov received a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Al-Farabi Kazakh National University in 1991.
In 1997, he received a PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, Little Rock, AR, USA. From 1999 to 2006, he was a postdoctoral fellow and then a research associate at the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research (part of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology), Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. In 2006, he joined the faculty of the Department of Molecular and Cellular Oncology at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas.
Professor Dos Sarbasov worked at the MD Anderson Cancer Center for a long time and returned to Kazakhstan from the USA in 2019 after 27 years. He is currently the Director of the Astana National Laboratory and Vice President for Research (STEM) at the School of Natural Sciences and Humanities. His main research interests are nutrient-dependent regulation of cell growth and survival, including its deregulation in cancer. His research has contributed to the understanding of the important mechanical target of rapamycin (mTOR), which controls cell growth in all eukaryotes.
A team of scientists from the Astana National Laboratory (NLA) of Nazarbayev University, led by Professor Dos Sarbasov, in collaboration with oncologists from the Kazakh Research Institute of Oncology and Radiology, continues to work on the development of an effective cancer drug.
In 2000, Dos Sarbasov received a fellowship from the Anna Fuller Foundation in the field of molecular oncology, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. In 2007, he became a Fellow of the MD Anderson Research Foundation, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, Texas, USA.
He has more than 25 years of scientific experience in foreign organizations and significant experience in organising, coordinating and managing modern interdisciplinary scientific research. During his scientific career he has published more than 80 scientific papers, 37 manuscripts and is one of the discoverers of the role of MTOR protein in cell growth, proliferation, mRNA transcription and protein biosynthesis inside cells. He is a member of the American Association of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, the National Council of Science and Technology under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
In 2024, by order of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Dos Sarbasov Zhurmakhanbetovich was appointed Vice-President of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan under the President of the Republic.
On the basis of the above, the Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology, for his great contribution to the training of highly qualified specialists in the field of molecular biology, biochemistry and carcinogenesis, and a graduate of the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics, requests that Dos Sarbasov be awarded the medal "Yeren enbegi ushin".
