Scientists of Al-Farabi KazNU conduct research of flood situation in Western Kazakhstan.

Scientific works are carried out within the framework of realization of megagrant "Sustainable development of natural-economic and socio-economic systems of West Kazakhstan region in the context of green growth: complex analysis, concept, forecast assessments and scenarios".

To control the flood situation in the basin of the Zhaiyk River in Atyrau, an operational response headquarters was established under the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the RK Committee of Science.  A group of scientists, including senior lecturer of the Faculty of Geography and Nature Management Almat Erdesbay assessed the current flood situation in the Zhaiyk River basin.

Scientists have carried out calculation, graph-analytical, hydrological, field studies with the use of instrumental measurements (hydrometric turntable, UAV echo sounder, GNSS-receiver). They are aimed at identifying the state of infrastructure, canal capacity, and possible measures for transit of maximum flow rates along the branches of the Zhaiyk River.

Researchers carried out a comprehensive analysis of all available information, including hydrological observations, determined the time of water run-up and flood waves. Cross-sectional profiles were constructed and analyzed for gauging stations of the main channel of the Zhaiyk River.

According to available operational data, using cartographic materials, as well as field surveys of the territory, recommendations were given on the time of maximum water discharge reaching Atyrau city, as well as on the state of flow capacity of the channels.

Since April 20 of the current year, scientists of the Faculty of Geography and Nature Management - E. Kakimzhanov, A. Tokbergenova, E. Sarybaev, A. Ryskeldieva, K. Zulpykharov, as well as doctoral student N. Khamitov conduct comprehensive field research in the West Kazakhstan region.

During the survey of the neighborhoods of Aktobe city, flooding of settlements located in the valley of the Ilek River was established. It includes country houses "Lokomotiv", "Vesna", "Stroitel-4", "Rassvet Leskhoz", "Zelenstroy", "Aktoberentgen", "Zoovetsnab", "Vishnevy Sad". It is noted that the water level rose by about 2-3 meters. House fences were demolished, roads were washed away, gas pipelines were collapsed, and trees in the forest area were flooded. A comparative analysis was made by a multi-rotor drone with space image.

In addition, a physical and chemical study of water samples of the Ilek River was carried out, and physical and chemical indicators in the surface water of the Ilek River were determined. These studies showed that there is an excess of harmful suspended solids.
