Archaeologists of the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University examined ancient settlements of the Sak-Usun period on the territory of Almaty region and determined the location of several dwellings.

The research expedition was implemented within the framework of the project ‘Interdisciplinary (archaeological and historical-ethnographic) study of cultural heritage of south-eastern and eastern regions of Kazakhstan (Shu-Ili areal, Tarbagatai and Alakol Basin)’, presented by the Science Committee of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The project leader is PhD Rinat Zhumataev. The Belbulak settlement was also investigated under the supervision of Professor Claudia Chang, an archaeologist from the USA.
The settlement dates back to the Usun period. During this year's field season, the structure of several dwellings was discovered. Finds are represented by fragments of ceramics and bones of various animals. Samples were taken for interdisciplinary research.   Teachers, researchers, doctoral students, master's students and university students participated in the research. The study of this settlement will continue in the next field season.

This international research was conducted from 24 June to 10 July 2024, as part of the History Department's programme to attract international scholars to lecture at summer field schools and participate in research.
