September 20, 2024, Almaty – Today, third-year students majoring in "Oriental Studies" at Al-Farabi KazNU held a debate within the framework of the "Culture of the Studying Nation" course. The debate focused on the construction of a nuclear power plant (NPP) in Kazakhstan, discussing the pros and cons of such a project and its impact on the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Proponents of NPP construction emphasized that nuclear energy significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions and is an effective tool in combating climate change. They highlighted its importance for achieving SDG 13 – climate action. Additionally, they argued that an NPP could ensure the country's energy independence and support economic stability, contributing to SDG 7 – affordable and clean energy, and SDG 8 – economic growth.

Opponents of NPP construction raised concerns about the risks associated with nuclear energy, especially in the event of accidents, which could have severe environmental and health impacts, contradicting SDG 3 – ensuring healthy lives and well-being. They also pointed out the challenges of nuclear waste management and suggested investing resources in renewable energy instead.

In conclusion, the students acknowledged the complexity of the issue and the need for further discussion. The topic remains relevant for future study within the academic curriculum.
