Elections of the Student Dean

2 october, 2024

On October 2, 2024, the Mechanics and Mathematics Faculty concluded the elections for the Student Dean — a significant event that garnered the active participation and interest of the students. This year, four candidates ran for the position of Student Dean: third-year student of the "Mathematics" program Ketesh Z.B., second-year student of the "Space Engineering and Technologies" program Sarsenova A.R., third-year student of the "Actuarial Mathematics" program Turganbek N.K., and second-year student of the same program Tursyntai N.N. Each candidate presented their unique program for the development of the student community and actively campaigned. Out of 192 voters, 14 voted for Z.B. Ketesh, 19 for A.R. Sarsenova, 31 for N.K. Turganbek, and 128 for N.N. Tursyntai, who was ultimately elected as the new Student Dean of the Mechanics and Mathematics Faculty.

The election of the Student Dean is not just a formal event but an effective practice in organizing democratic processes. Throughout the campaign, candidates gained and applied skills in public speaking, communication, teamwork, and time management. For voters, it was an opportunity to engage in civic activity, make a conscious choice, get acquainted with the candidates' programs, and evaluate their ideas.

Moreover, this event served as preparation for upcoming important civic activities, such as the October 6 referendum on the construction of a nuclear power plant. Students experienced firsthand what it means to be part of a democratic process, make informed decisions, and participate actively in societal life.

Such initiatives not only promote unity within the faculty but also help students understand democracy, teaching them to argue their positions, listen to others, and make responsible choices. This fosters civic awareness and contributes to the development of an active civic stance among future specialists.

These kinds of events are directly connected to Sustainable Development Goal 16 (SDG 16) — "Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions." The transparent and active participation of students in elections promotes the principles of democracy, transparency, and equality. It teaches them to respect others' opinions, work in teams, and develop leadership and self-governance skills that will benefit them not only in university but also in their future professional and social endeavors.

Student elections are an important step in the development of effective student self-governance institutions, aimed at improving every student's life, enhancing interaction between students and faculty, and creating conditions for successful and productive learning. We congratulate all participants of the elections and hope that the newly elected Student Dean will continue to develop initiatives aimed at enhancing faculty life, fostering an atmosphere of cooperation and understanding, and strengthening principles of civic responsibility.
