Cleanliness and Sustainable Development: Community Cleanup at Kazakh National University

5 october, 2024

On October 5, 2024, a traditional community cleanup was held at the university. Faculty members and students from the Department of Biology and Biotechnology actively participated in the event, putting in efforts to clean the university's grounds and foster ecological culture. The goal of the cleanup was to tidy up the campus, enhance ecological awareness, and increase student engagement.

As part of the event, special attention was given to Goal 12 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – Responsible Consumption and Production. Students implemented important steps towards fostering ecological culture and protecting nature by learning to sort recyclable waste and use environmentally friendly products. They studied methods for properly sorting various paper, plastic, and metal waste and worked to establish an ecologically responsible order on the university's premises.

Additionally, Goal 15 of the SDGs – Protecting, Restoring, and Promoting Sustainable Use of Terrestrial Ecosystems – was also highlighted. This was a step aimed at ensuring the sustainability of ecosystems, increasing care for nature, and maintaining ecological balance. In this way, students contributed to improving the ecological situation at the university.

During the cleanup, friendly relations among students and faculty were strengthened, and a team spirit was cultivated. This event was not only a means of maintaining cleanliness but also aimed at developing ecological knowledge and responsibility, as well as enhancing social consciousness in society. The cleanup became one of the important activities contributing to strengthening the university's ecological culture, boosting student engagement, and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. This initiative inspired young people to develop a love for nature and to pay attention to environmental issues. Future graduates of the university, raised with this sense of responsibility, will undoubtedly make a significant contribution to the formation of an environmentally friendly society.
