Students of the Mechanical-Mathematical Faculty Actively Participate in the Republican Referendum on the Construction of the Nuclear Power Plant
On Sunday, October 6, 2024, students of the Mechanical-Mathematical Faculty of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University participated in the republican referendum regarding the construction of a nuclear power plant (NPP). Three polling stations were opened on the university campus, including station №568, located on the territory of the Mechanical-Mathematical Faculty at Al-Farabi Avenue 71/23.
The polling stations began operations at 07:00 local time and continued until 20:00. A total of 263 voters were registered at station №568. Voters answered the single question: "Do you agree with the construction of a nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan?"
Each voter received detailed information about the voting process and the elections. The stations were equipped with all necessary materials and attributes, creating a comfortable and safe atmosphere for voters. Volunteers and university staff were present to assist voters and answer their questions.
Students not only expressed their opinions on the pressing issue of the country’s energy security but also demonstrated an active civic stance by participating in the political life of the state. Local residents and the staff of KazNU also participated in the polling stations located at the university.
This event became an important milestone in the lives of the students, allowing them to realize the significance of their voice and involvement in public processes. We are proud that the younger generation is actively interested in the fate of the country and is ready to participate in its development. The participation of students in the referendum is also connected to SDG 7: "Affordable and Clean Energy", as the construction of the nuclear power plant is a key issue for ensuring Kazakhstan's energy security. The NPP can become an important source of clean energy, aligning with modern sustainable development requirements and reducing dependence on fossil fuel sources.
Additionally, this event is closely linked to SDG 16: "Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions". The participation of students and local residents in the referendum highlights the importance of democratic processes and active civic engagement in decision-making related to the future of the country. This contributes to strengthening legal institutions and ensuring transparency in governance, which, in turn, fosters a sense of responsibility among youth regarding their choices and encourages their involvement in political life. It is important for young people to understand the significance of their opinions and to realize that their voices matter in shaping a sustainable and just society.
According to Nurlan Abdirov, the head of the Central Referendum Commission, the final voting results across Kazakhstan are as follows: 5,561,937 citizens, or 71.12 percent, voted "in favor," while 2,045,271 people voted "against".
