Car Free Day: Supporting Inclusive and Sustainable Cities

22 september, 2024

September 22 is celebrated as Car-Free Day, a global initiative aimed at improving the quality of life in cities and supporting SDG 11, "Sustainable Cities and Communities." This day highlights the importance of alternative modes of transportation and emphasizes the need for inclusive public spaces where people can move freely without relying on private cars.

Additionally, Car-Free Day helps reduce traffic congestion and air pollution levels, which is especially relevant for densely populated megacities. Such events encourage residents to use more public and eco-friendly transportation, contributing to lower carbon emissions and improved public health.

We propose introducing a Car-Free Day event at the university level for students and faculty, allowing the academic community to participate in important environmental initiatives and support sustainable development. Such a day could become an annual event that unites the university in efforts to preserve the environment. This initiative will not only ease the strain on transportation infrastructure but also set an example for other educational institutions and organizations, showing how even small steps can lead to significant changes in the future.
