On March 16, 2024, under the auspices of the UNESCO Chair in Sustainable Development, a leadership lecture was held on "Water Supply Networks: Calibration and Chlorination. SDG 6 - Clean Water and Sanitation. The speaker for this lecture was Dr. Osman Nuri Ozdemir, Professor of Hydraulic and Water Resources Engineering, Department of Civil Engineering, Gazi University, Ankara, Turkey.

Professor Osman Özdemir graduated from the Civil Engineering Department of Middle East Technical University (METU) in Ankara in 1986. After graduation, he joined a team of scientists in river basin modeling using American HEC programs at the University of Trondheim (NTH) in Norway. He was also a research associate at the University of Cincinnati from 1994-1995 and conducted tests on chlorine decomposition studies in water system pipelines at EPA laboratories in Cincinnati, USA. Professor Ozdemir has taught water resources and fluid mechanics at Gazi University for 25 years. His research interests range from water systems to transboundary rivers.

Providing people with clean drinking water is one of the main UN Sustainable Development Goals. The problem of ecologically clean drinking water is also acute in our Republic and takes priority place in government development programs of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The purpose of the event was to provide young researchers, scientists and teachers with an opportunity to acquaint them with advanced technologies in the field of purification and preparation of drinking water for its further supply to the water supply systems of settlements. The lecture discussed the effect of flow time and water temperature on the decomposition of chlorine in water pipes and the effect of chlorination of drinking water on public health. In addition, some environmental engineering issues were raised and discussed.

The participants of this lecture were undergraduates, doctoral students and teachers of the Geography and Nature Management Faculty of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University. In the course of lively discussion, after the end of the lecture, the participants of the event asked a lot of questions to the speaker, to which they received comprehensive questions.

As a result of the event, students and professors received an invaluable experience of communication with the foreign researcher, and the faculty established new international relations with the prospects of participation in joint research projects.
