International scientific seminar dedicated to the problems of epic studies

On November 27-28, 2024, the Ural Humanitarian Institute of UrFU hosted a scientific seminar   on the topic: "Turco-Slavica and the epic heritage in the historical and cultural context", which was attended by researchers from Russia and Kazakhstan.

Doctor of Psychology, Director of the Ural Humanitarian Institute,  Elvira Evaldovna Symanyuk addressed the participants of the event with a welcoming speech, noting the importance of holding such seminars that contribute to the development of respect for the cultural heritage of the Turkic and Slavic peoples. In the welcoming address, on behalf of the Chairman of the Board - Rector of  al-Farabi  Kazakh National University,   Zhanseit Kanseitovich Tuimebayev, gratitude was expressed to the management and staff of the Ural Humanitarian Institute of UrFU for strengthening Kazakh-Russian relations and cooperation in the field of science and education.

The official part of the seminar was opened  by the Consul General of the Kyrgyz Republic in Yekaterinburg, Maksat Ishenbekovich Tentimishov, whose report was devoted to the significance of  "Manas" epic in the country and the world.

The scientific part included reports covering a wide range of issues: from the methodology of studying national identity in the epic heritage of the Turkic and Slavic peoples to studying the features of the linguistic and literary components of epics. Tatyana Nikolaevna Dmitrieva, Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor of the Department of Russian Language, General Linguistics and Speech Communication at UrFU, revealed the features of the representation of the concepts of "God" and "devil" in the Siberian Tatar lexical materials of G.Z. Bayer - G.F. Miller and in modern lexicographic sources. Amanzholova Dzhemma Bolatovna, Сandidate of Philological Sciences, assistant professor at Astana IT University, senior research fellow at the Research Institute of Turkology and Altaic Studies at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, revealed the features of teaching Turkic and Slavic epics in modern schools. Gudov Valery Aleksandrovich, Сandidate of Philological Sciences, associate professor at the Department of Russian and Foreign Literature, director of the undergraduate school at UrFU, made  a report on "Central Asia and the current culture of the late USSR", which aroused particular interest among the audience. Doctor of Philology, professor, director of the Research Institute of Turkology and Altaic Studies at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University Shaimerdenova Nursulu Zhamalbekovna presented a report on "The Epic of Gilgamesh in the Works of Bakhyt Kairbekov". Larisa Stepanovna Soboleva, Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor of the Department of Russian and Foreign Literature at UrFU, presented a report on the topic of "National Identity and Epic: Artistic Perception of "The Tale of Igor's Campaign". Olga Vitalievna Tomberg, Doctor of Philological Sciences, Director of the Department of Linguistics, Head of the Department of German Philology at UrFU, spoke about the images and values ​​of the Anglo-Saxon heroic epic. Yulia Vladimirovna Zapariy, Candidate of Historical Sciences, Head of the Department of Scientific and Innovative Work, Associate Professor of the Department of Modern and Contemporary History at UrFU, presented an interesting study on the topic of "Epic as an Object of Intangible Cultural Heritage".

The seminar program also included reports from young scientists: Irina Nikolaevna Kuznetsova, senior lecturer at the Department of Romano-Germanic Philology at M. Kozybayev North Kazakhstan University (topic: "Naming of persons in pedagogical discourse: epic experience and anglicisms in Kazakhstani education); Ainur Temirzhankyzy Kikbaeva, doctoral student at al-Farabi Kazakh National University (topic: "National and cultural specificity of anthroponyms and toponyms in the Kazakh epic "Koblandy batyr"); Iskender Akkuralai Abdiualiyevna, leading specialist at the "Manuscript Laboratory" of the Research Institute of Turkology and Altaic Studies at al-Farabi Kazakh National University (topic: "Epistolary heritage of Turkologists in the future of creating a virtual museum"). The moderator of the seminar, Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor of the Department of Fundamental and Applied Linguistics, Director of the Department of the Philological Faculty of the UrFU Institute of Historical Studies Anna Mikhailovna Plotnikova, summed up the results of the first part and thanked the speakers and listeners.

The work of the seminar continued in the format of a round table in the educational and scientific laboratory of archaeological research of the UrFU. Doctor of Historical Sciences, head of the laboratory Irina Viktorovna Pochinskaya introduced the guests and participants to the work of the laboratory, showed a unique fund of monuments of Cyrillic writing (numbering about 6,000 storage units), and conducted a tour of the restoration workshop.

The restorer Nadezhda Sergeevna Shcherbakova showed the process of restoring individual books, spoke about the work to preserve the heritage of the fund of Old Believer books and manuscripts.

During the meeting, the possibilities of using the experience of Russian colleagues to create a database of manuscripts of Kazakh Turkology in the "Laboratory of Manuscripts" of the Research Institute of Turkology and Altaic Studies at the Kazakh National University named after Al-Farabi were discussed, which is an important step in strengthening our scientific and educational ties.

The participation of the Kazakh delegation in this scientific event was implemented within the framework of the project "Turkic languages ​​of Kazakhstan in the context of spiritual modernization of society: from graphics to epic text" (AP23486380).
