A Master Class on Traditional Chinese Paper Cutting Was Held at the Department of Chinese Studies

On February 10, 2025, a master class on 剪纸 (Jianzhi)—the traditional Chinese art of paper cutting—was held at the Department of Chinese Studies. The session was conducted by Senior Lecturer A.Zh. Serikkanova for second-year students.
剪纸 is one of China’s oldest forms of folk decorative arts, with a history dating back to the Shang and Zhou dynasties. This unique artistic tradition has been passed down through generations and was recently included in UNESCO’s list of intangible cultural heritage.
The main themes of traditional paper cuttings reflect the daily life and labor of ordinary people. During the master class, students not only learned about the history of this ancient art but also tried their hand at creating their own paper-cut patterns, immersing themselves in the rich traditions of Chinese culture.
