On February 13, 2025, a round table was held at the Faculty of Journalism of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University as part of the "Barmankulov Readings" on the topic "The New Media Space of the 21st Century," dedicated to the memory of the founder of television and radio journalism in Kazakhstan, professor, and doctor of philological sciences, Marat Karibaevich Barmankulov. He laid the foundations of the scientific school of journalism and broadcasting in Kazakhstan, contributed significantly to the development of national television and radio broadcasting, and journalism education in the country. He was a mentor to many generations of journalists in Kazakhstan.
At the meeting, M.K. Barmankulov's relatives, close ones, colleagues, and former students shared their memories of him as a person with a kind heart, a progressive scholar-researcher, a talented educator, and an organizer of the educational process. Some of them mentioned how he believed in them, giving them confidence, others talked about his support through both words and actions, how he helped some find their way in life, supported them in difficult moments, gave others jobs, and became a scientific advisor for many. To all of us—his colleagues and students—he was a fair person, a kind mentor, a Teacher, and a Master with a capital letter.
Marat Karibaevich Barmankulov (1937–2000) worked at his alma mater for over 35 years. Starting in 1965, he progressed from being an assistant at the department to a doctor of philological sciences, professor, dean of both the day and correspondence faculties of journalism, and head of the Department of Television and Radio Broadcasting. In 1991, he became the first deputy editor of the leading republican newspaper in the country, "Kazakhstanskaya Pravda." M.K. Barmankulov's first books, "Reportage on Radio and TV" (1970), "The Whole World in Your Apartment" (1972), and "Journalism for Everyone", are still essential reading for today's generation of journalism students in the 21st century. Marat Karibaevich was an academician of the Kazakh Academy of Journalism, a public figure, an outstanding scientist, and a television publicist (he hosted the program "One Hundred Paths—One Hundred Roads" on Kazakh Television), as well as the author of numerous books on journalism, mass communication, cultural studies, and Turkology.
It has been 25 years since Marat Karibaevich left us, but every year, on his birthday (he was born on February 13, 1937), the Faculty of Journalism holds the "Barmankulov Readings" to exchange opinions and views on the development of journalism, listen to colleagues discuss new trends in the media space, and share experiences and knowledge with students, reflecting on the modern era.
As tradition, on this day, a student competition is held in the following categories:
- Best TV report;
- Best audio clip;
- Best newspaper article;
- Best research paper.
This time, the winners were: in the "Best TV Report" category – third-year student Darya Sizova, and in the "Best Research Paper" category – first-year master's student Chen Meimei. And, as always, a photo for memory!
