Scientists from KazNU have improved the effectiveness of cancer drugs

20 february, 2025

Scientists from the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University have improved approaches to the development of cancer drugs.

Specialists from the university studied the plant Parnolistik (Tuyetaban), which grows in the Ile-Balkhash region, and discovered its anticancer activity.

Parnolistik has been used in traditional medicine for a long time. However, scientific research on this plant has been insufficient until now. Scientists from Al-Farabi Kazakh National University conducted a large-scale study for the first time to identify the phytochemical and biologically active substances in its composition.

According to the researchers, this project will contribute to the development of domestic pharmaceuticals.

"As a result of the project, it was established that Parnolistik possesses high biological activity. The plant extracts demonstrated antioxidant, antimicrobial, and cytotoxic properties. In particular, the ethanol extract showed strong antioxidant activity, while the ethyl acetate extract proved effective against bacteria. Moreover, some of the plant extracts exhibited activity against leukemia cells. This opens up prospects for the development of anticancer drugs based on Parnolistik", - says Gulzat Kairanova, senior lecturer at KazNU and PhD candidate.

The scientific project is being carried out by Associate Professor Asem Mamurova, PhD, professor from Turkey Ahmet Beyatlı, and PhD candidate Gulzat Kairanova from KazNU. In the future, the specialists plan to obtain a patent and prepare articles for publication in high-ranking scientific journals.
