"Peace, Justice and Effective Institutions"

23 february, 2025

On February 23, 2025, at the initiative of the Department of Religious Studies and Cultural Studies, organized by doctoral students of the programs "Religious Studies" (r/g) and "Islamic Studies", an educational hour was held in the Museum of Memory of Victims of Political Repression in the Almaty Region on the topic "The Voice of History: Memory of Victims of Political Repression", in accordance with the Sustainable Development Goal "Peace, Justice and Effective Institutions".

Students in the programs "Religious Studies" and "Islamic Studies" took part in the educational event, and the director of the museum Meirzhan Musabayev familiarized them in detail with the exhibits presented in the halls of the museum. The first hall presents the history of the beginning of repressions, violence to which the people were subjected from the beginning of the 20th century until the December events, using the fates of individuals as an example. The suffering and humiliation experienced by the persecuted cannot leave a conscious citizen indifferent. The second hall contains a list of 4,125 people repressed in the Almaty region and 172 representatives of the intelligence who were subjected to political repression, and the interactive board displays the life stories of each of them. The third conference hall contains a collection of previously published publications and works. Every year on May 30, the Day of Victims of Repression, the museum presents a new book to readers. Then the students examined the monument and gravestones behind which the victims of repression are buried. The significance of the monument is enormous, and we were convinced that each of its parts has a deep meaning. Having familiarized himself with the main data, PhD, Associate Professor Azamat Shutbaevich made a report on the victims of repression and outlined the results of his research. At the end of his speech, he emphasized that each of us must be literate in this regard and contribute to the full disclosure of the dark sides of the dark period. At the end of the event, Meirzhan Musabayev presented a book from the museum collection to A.Sh. Zhamashev entitled "Din kayratkerlerinin kugyndaluy" ("Persecution of religious figures").

Thus, during the educational hour, students got acquainted with the museum's exhibits dedicated to the tragic pages of history and took part in an exchange of opinions on the significance of historical events for modern society. Particular attention was paid to fostering compassion for young people, understanding the value of human life and realizing the consequences of political repression.
