Attending the Play Karagoz at the G. Musrepov State Academic Theatre for Children and Youth

On 21.02.2025 second-year students of the Geodesy and Cartography program visited the G. Musrepov State Academic Theatre for Children and Youth to watch Karagoz, a tragedy by Mukhtar Auezov. This play is one of the significant works of Kazakh literature, illustrating the impact of traditional customs on the fate of young people.
During the play, students were introduced to Karagoz, a classical tragedy of Kazakh literature. The main characters, Karagoz and Syrim, deeply love each other, but they are unable to be together due to the Kazakh tradition of the "seven generations rule," which prohibits marriage between relatives within seven generations. This conflict highlights the struggle between tradition and personal freedom.
Students discussed the importance of long-standing Kazakh customs and their role in society. The seven-generation rule was established to preserve genetic purity, but in some cases, it also became a restriction affecting personal lives.
After watching the play, students reflected on the dual nature of traditions: while they help preserve national values, they can also impose certain limitations. Such cultural events contribute to a deeper appreciation of national literature and art, broadening students' spiritual and intellectual horizons.
