March 14 – Kórisý Kúnı (Kórisu Kuni)!

14 march, 2025

Today, March 14, is Kórisu Kuni, also known as the Amal Holiday. On this day, people forgive past grievances and wish each other health and well-being.

According to tradition, younger people visit the homes of older relatives and acquaintances to greet them. There is a belief that one must visit at least three homes.

The word “Nauryz” means “new day”. In the past, Kazakhs referred to this day as “Amal” instead of “Nauryz”, and these terms are essentially synonymous. In the modern calendar, this celebration falls on March 14.

On Kórisu Kuni, no formal invitations are needed, and the festive table remains open for guests throughout the day. People try to greet each other before noon, as this is when the holiday spirit is strongest. However, those who are late can still visit gradually throughout the evening.

It is also customary to repay any outstanding debts before this day. According to tradition, when greeting each other, men embrace and touch their chests together, while women hug and kiss each other on the cheeks. However, there is a belief that daughters-in-law should not greet their fathers-in-law or elder brothers-in-law in this manner.

On this day, everyone is expected to stay cheerful and not hold grudges. If someone does not participate in the greetings, it is considered appropriate to express disappointment by saying, “Kórisip shykpady” (He/She didn’t come to greet).

In honor of preserving national traditions, the faculty members of the Department of Cartography and Geoinformatics at the Faculty of Geography and Environmental Management of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University celebrated March 14 – Kórisu Kuni.

May Kórisu Kuni, the holiday of unity and prosperity, bring happiness to all! Wishing you a blessed new year!
