Reading books is a source of knowledge

On March 17, 2025, Azhar Yessenbekova and Amina Kistaubayeva, the first-year master's degree students of «Foreign Philology» major, conducted a curatorial hour for the first-year students majoring in «Foreign Philology». The topic of the curatorial hour was «Reading books is a source of knowledge» which was part of their pedagogical practice. The senior lecturer of the Department of Foreign Philology and Translation Studies, group advisor A.S. Aushenova were present at the event.
The primary aim of the event was to explain the significance of reading books to students, foster a culture of reading, and enhance their cognitive interest. During the lesson, the key topics such as the role of books in human life, their history, literary genres, and various interesting and useful facts about books were discussed.
One of the central discussion points was the questions: «What role do books play in your life? » and «What thoughts can you express about books? ». The students were able to articulate their opinions in a detailed and profound manner. During the discussion, they were divided into four groups and, using a cluster analysis format, addressed the following questions: «Which is more effective – modern printed books or electronic editions?», «How can reading be made more engaging?», «What books should contemporary youth read and why?», and «How can the value of books be explained to someone who does not read?». During the group discussions, participants shared their unique ideas and perspectives.
In the concluding part of the event, the students were given the task of identifying excerpts from popular contemporary books, reinforcing the notion that books remain highly relevant. The information presented was beneficial to students, helping them broaden their horizons and enabling them to select literature according to their personal preferences in the future.
The topics addressed during the curatorial session sparked genuine interest among the students. They had the opportunity to express their thoughts openly, analyze emerging ideas, and engage in discussions on various aspects of the subject. The event was conducted in both Kazakh and English.
