Climate Corps Summer School 2025: Knowledge and Ideas at Korea University

12 august, 2025

Raushan Yrysbek, a second-year PhD student in Hydrology, took part in the Climate Corps Summer School 2025, hosted by Korea University (Seoul). The international program, held from July 7 to 12, brought together 130 participants from 35 universities across six continents to address global environmental issues through interdisciplinary and cross-cultural collaboration.

Held under the theme "Cross-border Collaboration for Climate Crisis", the program included lectures, workshops, team projects, and site visits. Raushan joined the international Water Management team, which included participants from Peru, China, Colombia, and South Korea. Their project focused on: "Constructed Wetlands for Sustainable Wastewater Management in Agricultural Rural Areas in Mexico".

The aim of the project was to develop eco-friendly and economically feasible solutions for wastewater treatment in rural areas with limited infrastructure and resources. The team explored how natural processes and biodiversity could be used to improve water purification and support ecological sustainability.

Among the program's highlights was a visit to the Seoul Sewerage Science Museum, where participants learned about South Korea’s advanced wastewater treatment technologies and urban ecological innovations. This field trip was particularly valuable for the Water Management team, as it closely aligned with the topic of their research.

In addition to academic activities, participants were encouraged to practice zero-waste principles — using reusable materials, recycled clothing, and eco-friendly packaging — demonstrating that sustainability can be integrated into everyday life and education.

On the final day, each team presented their projects to a panel of experts. The experience helped participants develop essential skills in global teamwork, critical thinking, and academic communication.

“Participating in the Climate Corps Summer School 2025 was a major step in my academic and professional development. I’m grateful for the chance to represent my university and excited to apply what I’ve learned to real-world environmental challenges.
