Languages is the Key to Cultural Diversity

5 september, 2025

On September 5, 2025, the students of the Department of Foreign Philology and Translation Studies of the Faculty of Philology at Farabi Kazakh National University held an educational event on the topic:  “Knowledge of Languages as a Factor in the Development of Personality and Society.” It was organized within celebrating  the «Day of Languages  and was aimed at developing interest in language learning, fostering respect for cultural diversity, and raising awareness of the importance of multilingualism in the modern world.

The initiative came from the students themselves, who prepared both theoretical and practical content. Faculty members were invited as guests, which added academic significance to the event.

The program consisted of several thematic blocks. In the first part, the students spoke about the role of languages in human life: how knowledge of foreign languages provides access to new sources of information, expands employment opportunities, and contributes to intercultural dialogue. Particular attention was given to trilingualism in Kazakhstan, where the study of Kazakh, Russian, and English serves as the foundation of quality education and competitiveness.   The participants were then divided into groups, each preparing a mini-presentation. One group gave a report on the significance of the Kazakh language as the state language and a unifying factor for the nation. Another group highlighted the role of the Russian language in strengthening interethnic communication and preserving cultural heritage. The third group focused on English as the language of global communication and modern technologies. The second part featured interactive activities. Language games and a quiz were organized, where students answered questions about word origins, guessed proverbs, and compared linguistic expressions. These tasks not only generated great interest among participants but also helped consolidate their knowledge in practice.

The event contributed to broadening students’ horizons, developing critical thinking skills, and enhancing teamwork abilities. It emphasized that language learning is an essential part of both personal and professional growth.  Such initiatives help foster tolerance, respect for cultural diversity, and an understanding of the role of languages as a vital tool for building peace and cooperation among nations.
