SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation SDG 13: Climate Action
On September 20, 2025, students from groups BB23-09 and BB23-08 of the Biology Education Program (6B05102) at the Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University organized an environmental cleanup event dedicated to World Cleanup Day.
The event was held under the guidance of Associate Professor, Candidate of Biological Sciences, curator Assem Tleuzhankyzy Mamurova.
Participants cleaned the university campus and nearby green areas, collecting household and plastic waste, which was then sorted into recyclable and non-recyclable materials.
Clean Water and Sanitation are fundamental to human health and well-being. Water is the source of life, yet millions of people worldwide lack access to safe drinking water. Pollution of water sources and inadequate sanitation lead to the spread of infectious diseases, negatively impacting public health. Protecting water resources and improving sanitation are critical global challenges.
Ensuring access to clean water is a key indicator of sustainable development. It reduces child mortality, prevents disease, and improves the quality of life, especially for women and girls. Improved sanitation promotes social equity and public health.
Climate Action is one of the most pressing global issues today. Global warming, unpredictable weather patterns, droughts, and floods severely affect human life, agriculture, and biodiversity. The main driver of climate change is the increase in greenhouse gases, particularly carbon dioxide and methane emissions.
Addressing this issue requires international agreements and measures such as adopting renewable energy sources, reducing carbon footprints, protecting and restoring forests. Individuals and communities also play a vital role by conserving energy, recycling, choosing eco-friendly products, and protecting nature.
Access to clean water and sanitation and combating climate change are deeply interconnected. Water scarcity is exacerbated by climate change, and changing climates degrade water quality and availability. Therefore, integrated efforts on both fronts are essential for sustainable development and the safety of future generations.
Informational sessions were also held on the importance of water resource preservation, sanitation, and combating climate change. The event supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, specifically:
🔹 SDG 6 — Clean Water and Sanitation,
🔹 SDG 13 — Climate Action.
More than 30 students took part, demonstrating a high level of environmental responsibility and active civic engagement. The event contributed to the implementation of KazNU’s “Green Campus” initiative.
