INFORMATION LETTER
In the study of Kazakh history and the history of nomadic peoples in general, Chinese sources and historiography hold special significance. This is due to the fact that Chinese written records, which date back to ancient times and have continued uninterrupted to the present day, possess great scholarly value. Among the Chinese scholars who made a significant contribution to the study of the history and culture of the Kazakh people, a special place belongs to the outstanding Chinese scholar, Professor Su Beihai (1915–1999), who devoted more than 60 years to researching the history and culture of the Kazakhs and left behind a rich scientific legacy.
In honor of the 110th anniversary of Su Beihai’s birth, the Center for Contemporary Chinese Studies at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University and the Association of Sinologists of Almaty will hold a Republican scientific and practical round table on the topic:
“Su Beihai and the Study of Kazakh History in China”
on November 7, 2025.
Purpose of the event:
To analyze the academic works of Su Beihai dedicated to the history and culture of the Kazakh people, and to discuss the process of studying Kazakh history in China in order to promote scientific cooperation between scholars of the two countries.
Topics for discussion:
• Scientific and creative activities of Su Beihai and his contribution to the study of Kazakh history;
• The study of Kazakh history in China: past, present, and prospects;
• The scholarly value of Chinese sources related to the history of the Kazakhs.
Participants: Sinologists, historians, cultural scholars, master’s and doctoral students specializing in Chinese studies.
Working languages: Kazakh, Russian, English, Chinese.
