Open Lecture Held: “Protection of Rare and Endangered Plant Species”

On October 16, 2025, an open lecture was held at the Department of Botany and Agroecology, Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology (Zoology Room No. 1), as part of the 8D05108 – Geobotany educational program.
The lecture was delivered in English by Prof. Meruyert Sakenovna Kurmanbayeva, Doctor of Biological Sciences.
Course/Module: “Protection of Rare and Endangered Plant Species” (code: 75598 – Conservation of Rare and Endangered Plant Species)
Lecture Theme: “Endemic and Relict Plants of the Kazakh Altai: A Biodiversity Treasure at Risk”
The lecture provided a comprehensive overview of the taxonomic diversity of the Kazakh Altai’s endemic and relict species, their eco-geographical distribution, current conservation status, and conservation strategies. The speaker highlighted the functional roles of rare species in ecosystems and the anthropogenic and climatic threats they face, illustrating these with concrete examples, and systematically outlined in situ and ex situ approaches (nature reserves, botanical gardens, seed banks, microclonal propagation).
The session featured high-quality visuals and an interactive format: participants asked questions, engaged in discussion, and examined practical methods for monitoring and restoration. Attendees noted the clear and engaging delivery, expanded their knowledge of the region’s flora, and gained a deeper appreciation of the importance of preserving unique natural habitats; particular interest was drawn by the biological traits of endemics and relicts and species examples specific to the Kazakh Altai.
The event strengthened doctoral students’ research and analytical skills and promoted a culture of conserving rare plants. Department colleagues and the faculty administration praised the lecture’s scholarly and methodological quality and the audience’s active engagement.
