On October 14, 2025, a meeting dedicated to Sustainable Development Goal № 14 “Life below water” was held in Dormitory No. 17. Although Kazakhstan has no direct access to the sea, students emphasized that the country is closely connected with the ecological state of the Caspian Sea and its internal water bodies.
During the discussion, data from the Committee on Statistics of the Republic of Kazakhstan were presented: in recent years, the level of water pollution in the country has increased by 12%, and the volume of untreated wastewater has reached about 600 million m³ per year. These figures sparked an active discussion among the youth about their role in protecting aquatic ecosystems.
The students expressed their thoughts with enthusiasm: “We live in a country where even a drop of water is like gold. If we don’t learn to value it today, it might be too late tomorrow,” said Ayazhan Ishembai, a student majoring in “6B02304 – Translation Studies (Western Languages)”.
“The words of Abai Kunanbaiuly – ‘Love all humankind as your brother’ – can also be applied to nature: to love humanity means to protect the environment in which it lives,” added students of “6B02305 – Kazakh Philology” major.
The participants also recited the lines from a poem by Yevgeny Yevtushenko, emphasizing the inseparable bond between humans and nature:
Protect these lands, these waters,
Cherish even the smallest blade of grass.
Preserve the beasts within nature,
And only slay the beasts within yourself!
In conclusion, students discussed opportunities to participate in eco-initiatives and projects aimed at preserving the Caspian region. The meeting took place in an active and engaging atmosphere and contributed to the development of environmental awareness and critical thinking among future humanities specialists.
