On October 23, at the Department of Foreign Philology and Translation Studies of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University a demonstrative educational session on the topic: “Suicide Prevention among Youth: Causes and Solutions” among the 4th year students of Foreign Philology major with participation of the department lecturers Taeva R.M., Kazybek G.K., Bayeli A., Iskakova G.N. and others took place. The educational session was organized by the the 1st-year Master’s degree students of the Foreign Philology and Translation Studies department under the guidance of senior lecturer L.B. Nagiyatova.
The participants discussed the causes of suicidal behavior among young people, the speaker presented a small study having shown a growing trend in global statistics, and among the reasons there were noted: isolation, the feeling that no one understands you; helplessness, the feeling that you cannot control your life; hopelessness when the future does not bode well, and low self-esteem.
The participants agreed that despite the fact that, for centuries, scientists have sought to provide theoretical justification for suicidal behavior, currently there is no single theory explaining the nature of suicide, the causes and motives of suicidal behavior. But one thing is clear: this is a temporary weakness, clouding of the mind, a depressive state and a feeling of loneliness. The discussion took place in a warm, friendly atmosphere, the speakers' speech was sincere, and each participant tried to analyze the causes and methods of suicide prevention.
