SDG-4: Students Attended the Play «The Scent of Wormwood»

19 october, 2025

On October 19, 2025, students from the Faculty of Physics and Technology and the Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University visited the Gabit Musrepov State Academic Theatre for Children and Youth. The purpose of this visit was to strengthen cultural and spiritual values and to foster a deeper appreciation of art among students. They attended one of the outstanding works of Kazakh dramaturgy — the play «The Scent of Wormwood».

«The Scent of Wormwood» is a profound and emotionally charged work that depicts the life of a Kazakh village during the war years, the tragedy of orphanhood, and the bitterness of separation. The play holds a special place in conveying humanistic values and emphasizing the importance of one’s homeland and the natural world.

Throughout the performance, students observed the director’s artistic choices and the actors’ sincere performances, highly appreciating their skill in conveying the emotional struggles of people during wartime and the difficult yet sacred moments of rural life.

The main idea of the play is to show, through the fate of children left without their loved ones and the wounds left by war, the resilience of the human spirit and the deep longing for the homeland — a longing as familiar and cherished as the scent of wormwood itself. These themes encourage young people to remember history, appreciate the value of peaceful life, and recognize the importance of spiritual strength.

Such cultural events enrich students’ inner world, fostering moral and patriotic values. The university’s organization of this theater visit became an important step in raising the cultural awareness of young people and contributed significantly to their creative and personal growth.

The students were deeply moved by «The Scent of Wormwood», feeling the hardship of wartime and the tender sorrow of a child’s heart longing for home. The play left a lasting impression on the audience, becoming a source of spiritual reflection and a reminder of the true value of human life.
