TEACHING SPECIALIZED JOURNALISM: ISSUES AND SOLUTIONS

6 november, 2025

SDG-4 There are many types of specialized journalism in the world. The main ones are eleven: business journalism, sports journalism, science journalism, medical journalism, political journalism, arts journalism, IT journalism, environmental journalism, automotive journalism, travel journalism, and legal journalism.

As part of Astana Media Week, a roundtable discussion titled “Current Issues in Training Specialists in Specialized Journalism” was held. The event brought together representatives from educational institutions across the country responsible for training future journalists. The roundtable addressed issues such as improving the journalist training system and strengthening cooperation between government bodies, educational institutions, and the media community.

On behalf of the Journalism Faculty of KazNU, a presentation was made on developing journalism education in a specialized direction, enhancing interdisciplinary teaching, and implementing dual education. Relevant proposals were also put forward. The General Director of “Qazaq Gazetteri” LLP, academician Dikhan Kamzabekuly, emphasized the importance of involving experienced practitioners in the development of specialized journalism. The Dean of the Faculty of Journalism and Social Sciences at ENU, Nurzhan Kuantaiuly, shared his experience of teaching specialized journalism within a dual-degree framework. The presentation of journalist and lecturer Zhanna Zhailaubaikyzy from Yassawi University also drew great interest.

We express our gratitude to the Ministry of Culture and Information for organizing this roundtable. This meeting not only allowed participants to discuss pressing issues in the field but also helped establish communication among colleagues involved in training journalism professionals across the country.
