Scientific Research Institute for Problems of Biology and Biotechnology
Scientific Research Institute of Problems of Biology and Biotechnology was formed and registered by the Department of Justice of Almaty (No. 10700-1910-U-e dated November 23, 1993) based on the decision of the Academic Council of the Al-Farabi Kazakh State University of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan in order to increase the efficiency of ongoing research work and the training of highly qualified scientific personnel and specialists for the national economy.

In accordance with the Decree of the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan dated September 6, 2002 №984, the Institute was reorganized into a Subsidiary State Enterprise on the right of economic management "Scientific Research Institute for Problems of Biology and Biotechnology" of the Republican State Enterprise on the right of economic management "Al-Farabi Kazakh National University" of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan (registration certificate № 53281-1910-GP dated February 4, 2003). By the Decree of the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan dated October 11, 2019 №752 the Subsidiary State Enterprise "Research Institute for Problems of Biology and Biotechnology" of the Republican State Enterprise "Al-Farabi Kazakh National University" of the MES RK was transformed by merging into a non-profit joint-stock company (NJSC) "Al-Farabi Kazakh National University". At present, the Research Institute for Problems of Biology and Biotechnology functions as a structural subdivision of NJSC “Al-Farabi KazNU".
The first director of the Institute, the Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor Tuleukhanov Sultan Tuleukhanovich led the Institute from 1993 to 2000. From 2000 to the present, the director of the institute is the Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor Bisenbaev Amangeldy Kuanbaevich.
The Institute was established on the initiative of the Rector of the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, the Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan Naribaev K.N., the Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Dean of the Faculty of Biology Bersimbaev R.I. With the support of the leading scientists of the Faculty of Biology - Academicians of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan Shigaev M.Kh., T.M. Masenova, professors Mukhitdinova N.M., Tulekhanova S.T., Zhubanova A.A., Shalakhmetova T.M., Mitrofanov V.G., Ivashchenko A.T., Nurtazin S.T., Boguspaev K.K. and etc.
From the day of its foundation, the Institute has been an important training center for the Faculty of Biology of Al-Farabi KazNU.There are close ties with all departments of the Faculty of Biology. Topics of dissertations of master's and graduation works are closely related to the research carried out in the laboratories of the Institute. Graduate works of bachelors, master's theses and dissertations of PhD doctoral students are carried out on the basis of the existing laboratories of the Institute.
Mission: promotion of scientific research in the field of biology and biotechnology aimed at solving priority problems and tasks of agriculture, medicine and environmental protection, training of highly qualified scientific personnel.

Goals and objectives
The purpose of the Scientific Research Institute for Problems of Biology and Biotechnology is planning, organizing and providing scientific research in the field of biology and biotechnology aimed at solving priority problems and tasks of agriculture, medicine and environmental protection, training highly qualified scientific personnel. Implementation of the results of scientific research and development work in the relevant industries and the educational process, ensuring further growth and diversification of the economy of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
The subject of activity of the SRI PBB is scientific research and experimental development in the field of biology, biotechnology and environmental protection, as well as advanced training and training of specialists in the field of innovation and entrepreneurship, technology commercialization, along with the provision of consulting services in activities.
The main tasks of the Research Institute for Problems of Biology and Biotechnology are:
- carrying out fundamental and applied scientific research within the framework of state, regional, sectoral, international and other programs and projects, as well as under grants from domestic and foreign foundations and organizations in the field of biology, biotechnology and environmental protection;
- improvement of existing and creation of new technologies, materials and equipment;
- design and development of scientific and technical programs and projects, as well as plans for research and development work in the field of biology and biotechnology;
- conducting scientific and technical expertise of scientific research in the field of biology, biotechnology and environmental protection, selection of completed applied research for further practical development of scientific products and ensuring the patent purity of scientific developments;
- organization of experimental, serial and high-tech industries and commercialization of scientific and technical developments and experimental design work of a biological, biotechnological profile;
- assistance in the training of highly qualified scientific personnel and specialists in the natural sciences at the level of bachelors, masters and PhD;
- training of scientific personnel through the organization of internships, courses for training, retraining and advanced training of employees of third-party organizations in the areas of activity of the institute;
- participation in the development, testing and implementation of innovative methods, teaching and research technologies aimed at further development and improvement of the education and science system.
