The Research Institute of Turkology and Altaistics was established in October 2022 by the decision of the Academic Council (No. 11, dated June 30, 2022) of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University.
The Institute’s activities are aimed at addressing fundamental and applied scientific tasks related to the study and preservation of the rich Turkic and Altaic historical and cultural heritage; the research of languages, cultures, and spiritual values of Turkic peoples; and the identification of common roots and value foundations of related languages and cultures.
The mission of the Institute is to develop Turkological and Altaic studies as a strategic direction of the humanities in Kazakhstan, to strengthen scientific cooperation among Turkic countries, and to integrate domestic Turkology into the global scientific community.
The main objectives of the Institute are: to conduct fundamental and interdisciplinary research in the field of Turkology and Altaistics; to form a modern scientific base for studying the languages, history, culture, and ethnogenesis of Turkic peoples; to train a new generation of Turkologist researchers and create an innovative educational environment; to study manuscripts and promote the Turkic cultural and linguistic heritage.
Comprehensive study and preservation of the Turkic and Altaic historical and cultural heritage, research of the languages, cultures, and spiritual values of the Turkic peoples, as well as identification of the place and role of the Turkic ethnolinguistic landscape in the global and civilizational context — based on monitoring international experience in the development of scientific knowledge in linguistics, literature, culture, history, archaeology, and ethnography of the Turkic peoples — which makes it possible to reveal the common values of related languages and cultures.
