The meaning of accreditation and its purpose

Accreditation of higher and post-secondary education institutions is the process by which an accreditation body recognizes the conformity of educational services to established accreditation standards and regulations.

The purpose of accreditation is to ensure quality and assess the conformity of educational organizations and educational programs to European Standards (ESG 2015) while also promoting transparency in the education market. 

 

Types of accreditation

Institutional Accreditation – the procedure for assessing the quality of a university by an accreditation body for compliance with its declared status and the established standards of the accreditation body.

Programme (specialized) Accreditation – assessment of the quality of individual educational programs according to European standards for 3 years, 5 years, and 7 years. There are several types of programme accreditation:

-Concept accreditation is applied to educational programs and there is no students are studying.

-Initial accreditation is the process of accrediting educational programs for the first time and there is an enrollment of students.

-Reaccreditation is the procedure where accreditation is conducted again for educational programs.

 

The significance of a license for educational organizations

A license is the right to conduct educational processes in educational institutions that offer educational programs for professional training and educational activities. The license legitimizes the activities of the educational organization and serves as a guarantee of its readiness to provide educational services.

As of September 1, 2025, a 372 educational programs at the University have successfully passed specialized accreditation, including 95 bachelor's programs, 144 master's programs, 111 doctoral programs and 22 residency programs.

Our Functions

 

•Coordination of licensing procedures, institutional accreditation and specialized accreditation of educational programmes;

 

•Interaction with international and national accreditation agencies within the framework of institutional and specialized accreditation;

 

•Planning and implementation of measures for the accreditation and licensing of educational programs, making proposals for the university administration on the possibility of accreditation of new educational programs;

 

•Submission of applications for institutional and specialized accreditation;

 

•Advising faculties on improving the quality of educational programs and preparing self-assessment reports for successful accreditation in accordance with European Quality Standards;

 

•Conducting consultations and seminars of faculty and department staff on accreditation and licensing issues within the competence of the Service;

 

•Support of the external audit procedure of experts of international and national accreditation agencies for external evaluation within the framework of institutional and specialized accreditation;

 

•Organization of external meetings and interviews of the expert group of accreditation agencies with the university management, faculty, employers and students;

 

•Internal university monitoring and control of the activities of faculties and departments of the University on the implementation of recommendations and elimination of comments provided by accreditation agencies;

 

•Coordination of meetings of experts from different fields of activity, with representatives of research institutes within the framework of international accreditation of educational programs;

   

 

INSTITUTIONAL ACCREDITATION 

The Accreditation Council of the independent agency for quality assurance in education (IQAA) decided to accredit Al-Farabi Kazakh National University for 5 years from May 11, 2024 to May 10, 2029.

Al-Farabi Kazakh National University cooperates with both kazakh and international agencies. Among international agencies, our partners are ACQUIN, ASIIN, FIBAA on the basis of the Law of the Republic of Kazakhstan dated July 27, 2007 No. 319-III "On Education" (with amendments and additions as of 07/04/2018) (Article 9-1). These organizations are members of international associations and quality assurance networks ENQA, ECA, CEENQA, INQAAHE, EUA, EQAR.

 

ASIIN, a German non-profit organization, is based in Germany and is a leader in the field of accreditation of educational programmes in engineering, natural sciences, mathematics, computer science, medicine and economics.  https://www.asiin.de/ru/ob-asiin.html

ACQUIN is a German accreditation agency that covers not only Germany, but also other countries, including Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Egypt, Mongolia and Lebanon, and cooperates with more than 150 educational institutions and professional associations in the field of science. https://www.acquin.org/ru/about-acquin/

FIBAA is an international organization that specializes in assessing the quality of educational programmes and higher education institutions in economics, business administration, law and social sciences.https://www.fibaa.org/

IQAA is a non–governmental institution "Independent Agency for Quality Assurance in Education" established in 2008 and is the first Kazakh non-profit non-governmental organization in the field of quality assessment of education and educational programs. https://arqa.agency/en 

IAAR (Independent Accreditation and Rating Agency) is the first accreditation agency from the CIS countries to receive a high recognition status of the World Federation of Medical Education WFME. https://iaar.agency/en

ARQA – Independent Agency for Accreditation and Examination of the Quality of Education "ARQA" is a non-profit non-governmental organization.  https://arqa.agency/

KAZSEE –  Accreditation Center is a structural subdivision of the Kazakhstan Society of Engineering Education. Its main task is the accreditation of educational programs in the field of engineering and technology. KazSEE is a member of the International Federation of Engineering Education Societies (IFEES).
