Round Table «Save Our Seas»: Raising Awareness of Ocean Conservation

18 november, 2025

On 8 October 2025, as part of the implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal No. 14, 'Life Below Water', Conserve and Sustainably Use the Oceans, Seas, and Marine Resources”, the Department of Foreign Languages organized a roundtable discussion titled 'Save Our Seas'. The event took place at the Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology, bringing together first-year  students from various academic programs.

The roundtable discussion provided an opportunity for open dialogue and intellectual exchange,  and environmental awareness. The students actively participated, demonstrating not only their  English language competence, but also their genuine concern for preserving the planet’s marine ecosystems.

Throughout the event, participants presented short reports and multimedia presentations  on pressing environmental issues related to the world’s oceans. Among the topics discussed were:

“Marine biotechnology: How ocean life helps solve human problems” —exploring innovative marine-based solutions for medicine, food production, and sustainable industry;

“Ocean acidity and climate change” — addressing the increasing acidification of the oceans and its devastating effects on coral reefs and marine biodiversity;

“Sustainable fisheries: Feeding the world without emptying the oceans”— emphasizing the importance of responsible fishing practices and the balance between human needs and ecosystem health.

The discussions highlighted the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in tackling ocean-related challenges. Students reflected on the human impact on marine ecosystems, analyzed current global initiatives, and proposed creative solutions for sustainable resource management.

The event also underlined the educational value of integrating the Sustainable  Development Goals (SDGs) into university teaching. By engaging with global environmental issues in English, students not only enhanced their communication and research skills but also developed a stronger sense of global citizenship and ecological responsibility. At the end of the round table, all participants received certificates of participation in recognition of their enthusiasm, research efforts, and active contribution to the discussion. The atmosphere was filled with inspiration, motivation, and a shared commitment to making a positive impact on the future of our planet.

Such events serve as a powerful reminder that small actions — when multiplied by young and determined minds — can make a significant difference in protecting our oceans and ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come.
