Completion of the “Ancient Bone Technology” Course: A New Impulse for Archaeological Studies
Аt Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, the special course “Ancient Bone Technology” has been successfully completed. The course was conducted by Dr. Malvina Boman, PhD, Associate Researcher at the University of Liège and the ZooStan Laboratory (CNRS–KazNU).
Throughout the course, students learned methods of zooarchaeological identification of animal bones, their anatomical features, and species-specific traits. They were also introduced to traceological techniques for recognizing processing marks on bone surfaces, such as cutting, scraping, and polishing.
During practical sessions, history faculty students from the 1st to 4th year worked with real specimens, mastering scientific approaches to bone material analysis. This experience represented an important step in understanding the role of bone tools in the interpretation of archaeological data.
Organized within the framework of the program of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the course provided a valuable academic platform for students and young researchers seeking deeper knowledge in archaeology, anthropology, and material culture studies.
