“The Current State of Kazakhstan’s Biological Resources”: Open Advisory Session within SDG 15 “Life on Land”
On December 1, 2025, at the Department of Botany and Agroecology, curator-adviser PhD, Senior Lecturer Zh.A. Abdukadirova held an open advisory session with first-year students of the educational program “6B05102 – Biology” (groups 25-17 and 25-18) on the topic “The Current State of Kazakhstan’s Biological Resources.” The event was organized within the framework of SDG 15 “Life on Land.” The main purpose of the session was to discuss the conservation and sustainable use of Kazakhstan’s unique terrestrial ecosystems, flora and fauna in the context of the Sustainable Development Goals, and to foster environmental responsibility and a scientific worldview among students.
During the session, the participants examined the current state of Kazakhstan’s biological resources, changes in natural complexes under anthropogenic pressure, the urgency of protecting rare and threatened species, and the role of protected areas in biodiversity conservation. Particular attention was paid to the rational use of wildlife and plant resources, the conservation of resource species, the restoration and increase of their populations, and effective management of natural reserves. Students presented their own reports and presentations on the use of biological resources in forest, steppe, desert and mountain ecosystems, as well as on land degradation and desertification issues.
The event was held in an interactive format, incorporating elements of discussion, group work and question–answer sessions. Students shared their views on the legal and ethical dimensions of nature use and emphasized the importance of personal responsibility and active citizenship in conserving Kazakhstan’s biological resources. In conclusion, the participants highlighted the key role of biologists – including future young scientists and teachers – in achieving SDG 15 “Life on Land” and expressed their willingness to engage in research and outreach projects aimed at protecting and restoring terrestrial ecosystems.
