KazNU Experts Contribute to UNDP Stakeholder Consultations on Kazakhstan’s Seventh National Biodiversity Report (SDG 14, 15, 17)
On 11 December 2025, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Kazakhstan held stakeholder consultations with representatives of government agencies, academic institutions, civil society organizations, and other partners to discuss the ongoing preparation of Kazakhstan’s Seventh National Biodiversity Report (7NBR).
Al-Farabi Kazakh National University (KazNU) was represented by biodiversity experts from the Faculty of Biology and Biotechnology: Nursulu Ziyahanovna Akhtayeva, Head of the Department of Botany and Agroecology, and Gulnara Bolatovna Kegenova, Head of the Department of Zoology, Histology and Cytology. The KazNU experts contributed scientific recommendations on key indicators, data validation approaches, and the further development of biodiversity monitoring systems, ensuring that the reporting process remains transparent, inclusive, and evidence-based.
During the consultations, participants reviewed progress in achieving national and global biodiversity targets, discussed successful practices and existing challenges, and proposed measures to strengthen conservation efforts, improve environmental policy, and enhance monitoring systems. Special attention was given to the national implementation of the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF).
The Seventh National Biodiversity Report is a key element of Kazakhstan’s commitments under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). The report will reflect achievements in conserving rare and endangered species, expanding protected areas, and promoting sustainable natural resource management, as well as remaining risks and gaps. Recommendations gathered during the consultations will be incorporated into the final version of the 7NBR, which Kazakhstan is expected to submit to the CBD Secretariat in February 2026.
KazNU’s participation in UNDP-led consultations demonstrates the University’s contribution to SDG 14 (Life below water), SDG 15 (Life on Land) through science-based support for biodiversity policy and monitoring, and to SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) through collaboration with UNDP and national stakeholders.
