Seminar on Sustainable Development Issues within SDG 13 “Climate Action”

23 december, 2025

On December 22, 2025, a scientific seminar dedicated to sustainable development and climate change issues was held at the Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technology of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University. The event was organized by the Department of Analytical, Colloidal Chemistry and Technology of Rare Elements in cooperation with tthe Environmental and  Analytical Chemistry Laboratory.

The seminar was conducted within the framework of the 13th United Nations Sustainable Development Goal “Climate Action” and aimed to discuss modern scientific approaches to assessing ambient air quality, identifying pollution sources, and evaluating associated risks to public health and economic damage. The initiative was supported by scientists from Toraighyrov University, who participated as invited speakers.

During the seminar, up-to-date scientific presentations were delivered based on research results published in leading international peer-reviewed journals, including Environmental Science: Advances, Urban Climate, and Atmospheric Pollution Research. The speakers included:

Ivan Radeluk, PhD, Associate Professor at Toraighyrov University (Pavlodar), with the presentation “Lost lives, lost money – the cost of PM2.5 air pollution in cities of Kazakhstan” (DOI: 10.1039/d5va00194c).

Olga Ibragimova, PhD, Senior Researcher at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, with the presentation “Characterization of ambient air pollution by volatile organic compounds in cities of Kazakhstan: from monitoring to health risk assessment” (DOI: 10.1016/j.apr.2025.102761).

Kazbek Tursun, PhD doctoral student and Researcher at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, with the presentation “PM2.5 particles: chemical composition and dominant sources in cities of Kazakhstan” (DOI: 10.1016/j.uclim.2025.102706).

The event was attended by representatives of various population groups:

Students and faculty members – 32

City residents, activists, and participants from other universities – 47

An active discussion followed the presentations, focusing on the practical significance of the scientific results for the development of air quality monitoring systems, improvement of environmental policies, and the adoption of science-based management decisions in the field of environmental and climate protection.

The seminar became an important scientific platform for knowledge exchange and confirmed the contribution of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University to the advancement of climate research and the implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals in the Republic of Kazakhstan, particularly SDG 13 – “Climate Action”.
