Animal Sterilization as a Humane Measure: A Seminar at Almaty Lyceum No. 134 within the Framework of SDG 17

23 december, 2025

On December 22, 2025, a seminar entitled “Humanity and Health: Is Animal Sterilization Necessary?” was held at Lyceum No. 134 in Almaty, within the framework of SDG 17 — “Partnerships for the Goals.”

The initiator and organizer of the event was K.T. Abidkulova, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Botany and Agroecology, Al-Farabi Kazakh National University. The seminar was conducted jointly with Dinara Zhakupova, a veterinarian, animal welfare volunteer,
and representative of the charitable foundation Inu Foundation (@shiba_help_kz). The seminar was attended by 27 tenth-grade students of the lyceum.

During the seminar, Dinara Zhakypova spoke about the sterilization and neutering of companion animals, paying special attention to common myths that often hinder a responsible attitude toward this procedure. She emphasized that sterilization is one of the most effective and humane methods for preventing the growth of stray animal populations and is also an important measure in the context of public health.

A separate part of the seminar was devoted to the activities of the Inu Foundation. The foundation is engaged in rescuing animals and finding new homes not only for Shiba Inu and Akita Inu dogs, but also for other dogs. The speaker shared her personal experience as a volunteer and noted that there are various ways to help stray animals, many of which are accessible not only to adults but also to school students.

The seminar generated strong interest among the audience. The students listened attentively, actively asked questions, shared their opinions, and took part in the discussion, demonstrating genuine engagement with the issues of humane treatment of animals and social responsibility.
