Farabi University Scientists conducted an outreach training for the Almaty Region Department for Emergency Situations
On January 29, 2026, representatives of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University conducted an outreach training event for employees of the Department for Emergency Situations of the Almaty Region. The training was delivered by M.K. Kassenov, Director of the Center for Sustainable Development and Rational Nature Management; A.A. Ulman, Leading Researcher of the Faculty of Geography and Environmental Sciences; and Zh.T. Raimbekova, Deputy Head of the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology for Research, Innovation, and International Relations.

The training was held at the premises of the Department for Emergency Situations and aimed to enhance the professional capacity of senior officials and specialists of emergency prevention units in the field of assessment and management of geodynamic risks.
The lecture sessions addressed contemporary concepts of geodynamic processes, including debris flows, landslides, and other hazardous natural phenomena typical of mountainous and foothill areas of the Almaty Region. Particular attention was paid to the impact of climate change and human activities on the increasing frequency and intensity of geodynamic processes.

Participants were introduced to the main results of a scientific project implemented by KazNU researchers, using the Tolebi District as a case study. The presentation included an analysis of key risk factors and approaches to reducing territorial vulnerability. The materials presented generated active discussion and strong practical interest among the specialists of the Department for Emergency Situations. The meeting concluded with discussions on prospects for joint scientific research on geodynamic processes in the Almaty Region, as well as possible formats for further cooperation between the university and emergency management authorities.
Conducting outreach training activities is an important component of KazNU’s strategy for transferring scientific knowledge beyond the university and contributes to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities and SDG 13 – Climate Action. KazNU continues to develop practice-oriented education and strengthen cooperation with government institutions to enhance regional resilience to natural hazards.
