“When the Hero Spoke…”.

23 february, 2026

On February 23, Senior Lecturer of the Department of Russian Philology and World Literature, Nazgul Tilepbergenovna Edrenova, together with students of the “Cinema and Media” program, conducted an educational event entitled “When the Hero Spoke…”. The event was organized within the framework of Sustainable Development Goal 4 — “Quality Education,” proclaimed by the United Nations.

       The purpose of the event was to develop the professional linguistic competence of future specialists in the field of cinema and media, to enhance students’ ability to analyze screen characters through language, and to improve their oral and written communication skills.

During the event, the following issues were addressed:

• the role of lines and dialogue in shaping a screen character;

• the linguistic portrait of a film hero as a means of revealing character;

• the impact of intonation, vocabulary, and stylistic devices on audience perception;

• the specifics of a character’s speech in both screenplay and on-screen performance.

      Students analyzed excerpts from feature films, focusing on characters’ speech patterns, communicative strategies, and stylistic features of dialogue. Particular attention was paid to the relationship between a character’s language and their social, cultural, and psychological identity.

    The practical component included creative tasks such as constructing a linguistic portrait of a character, writing original lines for a given persona, and discussing how changes in language influence the perception of the hero.

      The event contributed to the development of students’ analytical thinking, communicative culture, and professional skills in working with media texts. Within the framework of SDG 4, special emphasis was placed on ensuring quality education through the integration of philological knowledge and media practice, meeting contemporary requirements for training specialists in the field of cinema and media communications.

       As a result, students deepened their understanding of language as a key instrument in constructing artistic images and recognized the importance of linguistic competence in their future professional activities.
