ENVIRONMENTAL JOURNALISM – AN IMPORTANT INFORMATIONAL FIELD STUDYING THE ENVIRONMENT
SDG-4 The development of digital media has increased the impact of environmental journalism, as environmental issues are now widely disseminated to audiences through social media, documentary films, multimedia reports, and other formats.
On February 20, 2026, students of Group 203 of the Faculty of Journalism (advisor: Associate Professor R.S. Zhaksylykbayeva) held a curatorial session on the topic “The Role of Environmental Journalism in the Media Space.” During the session, it was discussed that modern journalists not only report on nature protection but also address pressing issues such as environmental safety, climate change, water resources, industrial waste, and other critical challenges in today’s media environment.
As a result, the students identified the informational function of environmental journalism in the media space (timely reporting on environmental disasters, legislative changes, and scientific discoveries); the educational function (shaping environmental culture in society and promoting the values of responsible consumption and nature protection); and the watchdog function (ensuring public oversight of compliance with environmental standards by industrial enterprises and government bodies). It was concluded that nature protection holds a significant place in the societal role of environmental journalism.
