Books Open Minds and Build Bridges Between Languages

25 february, 2026

On February 25, 2026, as part of pedagogical practice, a doctoral student of the programme “8D02302 – Translation Studies (Western Languages)” Ms Chen Tianxin conducted an interactive lesson titled “Literature as a Tool for Professional Language Development” within the course Language for Specific Purposes (LSP) for 3-year students majoring in Translation Studies (Western Languages) under supervision of a senior lecturer Yelena A. Morugova.

The lesson aimed to strengthen students’ linguistic competence, analytical thinking, and translation skills through the study of literary texts in English.

The session was organized in a collaborative learning environment where students actively presented and discussed well-known literary works, including J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter, George Orwell’s 1984, Five Feet Apart by Rachael Lippincott, and selected novels by Stephen King. Through presentations and guided discussions, students explored genre-specific vocabulary, stylistic features, and cultural references, connecting literary language with professional translation practice.

Within the framework of the LSP discipline, particular attention was given to language functioning in specialized communicative contexts and to strategies translators use when conveying meaning across cultures. Students analyzed lexical choices, narrative tone, and culturally marked expressions, developing competencies essential for future translators working with Western languages. Digital tools and collaborative tasks fostered active participation, critical reflection, and communicative confidence.

The lesson aligns with the priorities of the United Nations Sustainable Development Agenda, particularly Sustainable Development Goal 4 — Quality Education — by promoting innovative teaching methods, digital literacy, and inclusive student-centered learning while preparing highly qualified translation specialists.
