The premiere of the play “Apartment 117” took place at KazNU.
At Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, the student theatre “Biz” premiered a new stage production titled “Apartment 117.” The premiere became a significant cultural event in the university’s artistic life and attracted the attention of audiences interested in contemporary theatre and socially meaningful drama.
The play, written by the young playwright Kazybek Amanzhol in the genre of tragicomedy, explores the multifaceted nature of human destinies within the confines of a small living space. Through a thoughtfully constructed narrative, the author portrays various social and psychological aspects of modern life, revealing how different human experiences can unfold within a single location.
The storyline takes place in a modest one-room apartment measuring only 30 square meters. Despite its limited physical dimensions, this small apartment becomes a symbolic stage for a variety of human stories and emotional experiences. Over time, different families occupy the same living space, each bringing their own dreams, struggles, hopes, and disappointments. As the narrative unfolds, the apartment itself becomes a silent witness to the passage of time and the transformation of society.
Throughout the play, the audience observes the transition of generations and the changing realities of social life. Each family portrayed on stage represents a unique perspective on everyday struggles and aspirations. The apartment becomes a metaphorical crossroads where human destinies intersect, illustrating the complexity of life and the emotional depth of personal experiences.
The thematic focus of the production addresses several pressing issues of contemporary society, including social inequality, housing challenges, family relationships, and moral responsibility. Through the intertwined destinies of its characters, the play vividly portrays the everyday lives of people who struggle to secure stable living conditions while striving to maintain dignity, hope, and human values.
In particular, the production highlights the experiences of individuals who are forced to move from one rented apartment to another in search of stability. Through these narratives, the play reflects broader social realities and encourages the audience to reflect on the social and economic challenges faced by many people in modern urban environments.
The themes of the production also resonate with several priorities outlined by the United Nations within the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals. Specifically, the play aligns with the objectives of reducing social disparities – Reduced Inequalities (SDG 10), promoting inclusive and sustainable communities – Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11), and supporting the values of peaceful, just, and inclusive societies – Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions (SDG 16).
The student actors of the “Biz” Theatre delivered sincere and emotionally compelling performances, successfully conveying the inner conflicts and psychological depth of their characters. Their expressive acting enabled the audience to connect deeply with the characters and their stories, creating a powerful emotional atmosphere throughout the performance.
By skillfully combining elements of comedy and drama, the play evokes a wide range of emotions among the audience. At one moment it inspires laughter, while in the next it invites viewers to reflect on profound questions about life, society, and human relationships.
Thus, “Apartment 117” represents not only a creative achievement for the student theatre but also a meaningful artistic work that raises important social issues through the expressive language of theatre. The production demonstrates the creative potential and artistic maturity of young performers while emphasizing the role of theatre as an effective platform for dialogue, reflection, and the promotion of humanistic values in contemporary society.
