The Melodrama “Blue Taxi” Was Staged at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University
A melodramatic stage production titled “Blue Taxi” was presented at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University by the university’s student theatre troupe “Biz,” which brings together talented and artistically motivated young performers. The performance was showcased to a wide audience that included university students, faculty members, and theatre enthusiasts from the city of Almaty. The event became a significant component of the university’s cultural and intellectual life, promoting the creative development of students while fostering the dissemination of humanistic values through theatrical art.
The play was written by the distinguished Kazakh writer and public figure Sofy Smatayev and the prominent theatre and film director Talgat Temenov. Their collaborative work addresses profound social and moral issues, inviting audiences to reflect upon themes of human destiny, life’s challenges, and ethical responsibility.
The narrative of the melodrama centers on the life of a young man named Nurbakyt, who grew up without a father. The central storyline follows his struggle to support and care for his seriously ill mother. Confronted with numerous hardships and emotional trials, the protagonist remains steadfast in his sense of duty, compassion, and devotion to his family. Through Nurbakyt’s journey, the play highlights the importance of filial love, resilience, and the enduring strength of moral values.
Beyond its emotional narrative, the performance also addresses broader social themes related to empathy, responsibility, and solidarity. In this regard, the play aligns with the global initiatives promoted by the United Nations within the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In particular, the cultural and educational significance of the production corresponds with SDG 4 — Quality Education, which emphasizes the importance of inclusive learning environments that nurture creativity, critical thinking, and cultural awareness.
Furthermore, the social themes presented in the play resonate with SDG 16 — Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions. Through its artistic narrative, the production emphasizes the importance of justice, social support, empathy, and respect for human dignity, encouraging audiences to reflect upon the ethical foundations of a responsible and compassionate society.
The performance was brought to life through the expressive and emotionally compelling acting of the members of the “Biz” student theatre. The young performers demonstrated notable stage presence, artistic sensitivity, and emotional depth, successfully conveying the internal struggles and experiences of their characters. Their sincere performances created an atmosphere that deeply engaged the audience and enhanced the dramatic impact of the play.
The staging of “Blue Taxi” therefore represents not only a cultural event but also an important educational initiative within the university environment. Projects of this kind encourage students to develop their creative potential, strengthen their appreciation for theatrical arts, and cultivate a deeper understanding of social values.
In this context, the activities of the “Biz” student theatre illustrate the vital role of artistic expression within higher education institutions. Such initiatives contribute to the formation of a vibrant cultural environment at the university while supporting the development of socially responsible, culturally aware, and intellectually engaged young citizens capable of contributing to sustainable societal development.
