The Faculty of Information Technologies and Artificial Intelligence at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University has successfully completed the free short course “Introduction to Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning from First Principles” for students. The four-week educational program aimed to enhance students’ digital competencies and provide practical skills in applying artificial intelligence technologies.

The course was led by Samson Dawit Bekele, research engineer at the Computer Science Laboratory and author of more than ten highly cited scientific publications in the field of artificial intelligence. The program was designed in accordance with modern educational standards and effectively combined theoretical learning with hands-on practical training.

During the course, participants explored fundamental concepts of artificial intelligence and machine learning, modern approaches to data processing and analysis, the use of generative AI tools, principles of model development, and methods for evaluating results. Special attention was given to academic integrity and the responsible and ethical use of artificial intelligence technologies in education and research environments.

Classes were conducted in an interactive format incorporating practical case studies, collaborative assignments, and project-based learning activities that supported the development of analytical thinking and research skills. Students gained insight into real-world applications of artificial intelligence across education, science, business, and the digital industry, acquiring essential competencies demanded by today’s labor market.

Upon completion of the program, all participants received certificates confirming their knowledge and practical skills in artificial intelligence and machine learning.

The educational initiative also contributed to the implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 4 — Quality Education, SDG 9 — Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, and SDG 10 — Reduced Inequalities by promoting equal access to modern technological education.

Such initiatives implemented at Al-Farabi KazNU strengthen the university’s academic and research ecosystem, support the preparation of competitive specialists in the era of digital transformation, and contribute to building an intelligent and sustainable society driven by artificial intelligence technologies.
