THE RESULTS OF THE ACADEMIC YEAR WERE SUMMED UP AT THE ACADEMIC COUNCIL
The results of the work of dissertation councils, thesis defense process of doctoral students and the analysis of the quality and effectiveness of the summer examination session were discussed at the academic council of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University.
Vice-rector for Scientific and Innovative Activities Haidar Tasibekov presented the solutions of the first issue. He had shown the statistics on the activities of dissertation councils. The vice-rector emphasized the following: ‘by order of the Chairman of the Board – Rector Zhanseit Tuimebayev, 15 Dissertation Councils were opened in 65 educational programs. Today 77 of 89 KazNU doctoral students have been awarded a PhD degree’. The speaker announced the share of successfully defended dissertations by doctoral students of 2019-2021 graduation in the context of faculties. Thus, the three leaders included: Faculty of Law, Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technologies, Faculty of Information Technology. Vice-Rector also highlighted the problem of the lack of publication in international peer-reviewed scientific journals. In order to minimize all risks, a number of measures were proposed to strengthen the systematic work on the thesis defense procedure.
A detailed analysis of the quality and effectiveness of the summer examination session was presented by a member of the Board of Academic Affairs - Vice-Rector of KazNU Fatima Zhakypova. It should be noted that in the 2021-2022 academic year the university carried out work on the modernization of the educational process, which had a positive impact on the competitiveness of the portfolio of educational programs and. Experts analyzed the experience of leading universities in the USA (MIT, NYU, NYU, UW), Singapore (NUS), Europe (University of Amsterdam), which resulted in significant increase in the quality of final examinations. This academic year all exams were conducted on 3 platforms (Univer, Oqylyq, Moodle) in offline format. The number of students retaking exams is decreased by 2% of the total number of students, compared to the last summer session at the university.
The Department of Academic Affairs was instructed to complete the preparation of proposals for optimizing the main performance indicators and for de-bureaucratization of business processes. The Situational Management Center should conduct high-quality monitoring and control of the entire educational process, including the examination session, entrance exams and etc. Zhakypova noted that in general there is a good trend: the quality of education is improving. Due to the constant improvement of educational programs, the number of exams is expected to decrease in the next new academic year.
At the meeting the rector of the university, addressed the issue of financial costs of doctoral students in the humanities and social science, who encounter various difficulties during the publication of articles in foreign scientific journals. ‘We need to think about how to help doctoral students and resolve this issue. In the next new academic year we should not repeat mistakes and we need to take into account all the risks and work actively,’ the head of the university Zh. Tuimebayev stated.
Gulsharat Minazheva, Director of the Center for Strategic Development, made a presentation on improving the main indicators of the university. Also on the agenda were considered the issues of educational programs of the new academic year, organizational issues and etc.
