Welcome to Professor Korten’s lectures!
The objective of the Distinguished Visiting Professors Program of al-Farabi KazNU is to provide a flexible framework to attract reputed scholars in the world to our university and to promote its research and education impact. The Program allows students and teachers to experience different and innovative teaching methods, make a contribution to the University`s internationalization process, and establish collaboration in the field of scientific research activities.
Last year (in 2020-21) our department submitted a funding proposal to be able to invite Professor Christopher Korten as a visiting professor. We were happy to obtain this funding, and now Professor Korten is here as a visiting professor for a month (October10-November 7,2022).
Professor Christopher Korten completed his Master’s at Cambridge (1999) and his PhD at Oxford (2006) and currently holds a professorship at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan, Poland. He was formerly Professor at MGIMO University in Moscow and served as Director of Academic Writing. He regularly lectures throughout the world in some of the most prestigious universities, including Oxford, Cambridge, Rome, Leuven, Hong Kong, Trinity College Dublin, and Warsaw. In addition, he is an active writer, having published nearly 30 scholarly articles.
His has twelve publications in high rank Web of Science journals and a book “In the Eye of the Storm: The History of the Irish College, Rome, 1772-1826”, (Peeter’s Press, 2021), listed among top Academic press.
He has recently completed a chapter for the Cambridge History of the Papacy, a three-volume series, in which he wrote on Italian unification in the 19 th century. He is also working on two books, one of which is a biography of a 19 th -century Catholic pope; the other is Russian diplomatic history under Nicolas I. He also plans to co-author an article or two with our faculty dealing with cultural issues of translation into and from English.
Rarely do we have such a wonderful opportunity to collaborate with distinguished professors like Professor Korten. His program is very intensive. He is here as a research collaborator, a lecturer on “Academic Writing” and “New technologies of foreign language teaching”, co-teacher of graduate courses and advanced undergraduate courses and consultant on writing research papers for Scopus journals. In addition, Professor Korten’s work plan includes a discussion of research projects with graduate students, training them to develop research concepts and methodologies, and writing grant proposals and papers for publication. We hope very much that we will be able to establish a long-term collaboration with Professor Korten and heighten the scientific reputation of our department and University.
