Construction of three dormitories started in KazNU
The ceremony of laying the foundation stone for the construction of three modern dormitories for 3180 beds, each of which is designed for 1060 beds, was held at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University. The new student house, which is being built as part of Phase II of KazNU campus construction, is scheduled for completion in the fall of 2024.
The total area of the three 9-storey dormitories is 49,703.94 m2, and the area allocated for the building development is 1.24 hectares. On each floor of the student house there are modern reading rooms, recreation areas, a dining room, a coffee shop, a gymnasium, and sanitary facilities. One fully equipped room of 70 m2 will accommodate 4 people. In order to fulfill the requirements of inclusive education for students with disabilities, there are 132 beds in three dormitories.
The solemn event was attended by the university management, KazNU veterans, investors, media representatives, university faculty and young students.
On June 1, 2022 the Head of State Kasym-Jomart Tokayev familiarized himself with the activities of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University and approved the general plan of the II stage of construction of KazNU campus. On November 7 this year, the President of the country received the Chairman of the Board - Rector of the University Zhanseit Tuimebayev and gave a number of specific instructions on the modernization of the campus.
The construction of new dormitories is carried out on behalf of the President, with the support of the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan. In April, with the participation of Minister of Science and Higher Education Sayasat Nurbek, Deputy Mayor of Almaty Alisher Abdykadyrov and Head of KazNU Zhanseit Tuimebaev, a commemorative capsule was laid to mark the beginning of Phase II of construction.
Zhanseit Tuimebaev spoke at the event and noted that the start of construction of dormitories is a long-awaited joyful moment for the university. "President of RK Kasym-Jomart Tokayev pays special attention to the issue of providing students with dormitories. To solve this problem, it is necessary to maximize the approach to establishing public-private partnership with higher education institutions and construction companies," he said.
According to the II plan of KazNU development 12 dormitories, 8 academic buildings will be built in the campus. The main goal is to reduce the shortage of housing for students.
"On New Year's Eve we plan to lay the foundation of 4 educational buildings, and in January we will start construction of a medical center with an area of 35,000 m2. It will house a polyclinic, faculty of medicine and public health, dentistry. In addition, residential premises for employees, innovation center, IT hub, sports and health center, etc. will be built. II plan of KazNU campus development will be realized step by step. These construction works are planned for the next 3 years. In the coming fall KazNU will solemnly celebrate its 90th anniversary. To this event the first dormitory will be put into operation", - said the rector.
In conclusion, Zhanseit Kanseituly officially announced the start of construction of dormitories and together with investors laid the foundation of the students' house.
It should be noted that currently there are 15 dormitories in Al-Farabi KazNU. They accommodate about 6 thousand students of the university.
Recall, within the framework of the order of the Head of State, the Government of Kazakhstan intends to provide dormitories for 30 thousand students until 2026.
Minister of Science and Higher Education Sayasat Nurbek noted that the shortage of places in student dormitories has already decreased three times - from 55,050 in 2022 to 17,488 in October 2023.
