Round table «The role of the WTO in achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals: international legal aspects»

On February 27, 2024, a roundtable «The role of the WTO in achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals: international legal aspects» was held at the Faculty of International Relations of Farabi University, dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the university and its contribution to achieving SDG No. 8 «Decent work and economic growth».

The roundtable was opened by the Dean of the Faculty of International Relations, PhD Delovarova L.F. and the Head of the Department, candidate of legal sciences, Associate Professor Sairambaeva Zh.T.

The event was organized by the WTO and International Trade Law Center of the Department of International Law. The moderator of the roundtable was PhD, Acting Associate Professor, Director of the Center for WTO and International Trade Law Otynshieva Aidana Aitukyzy.

During the roundtable, topical issues such as the role of the WTO in achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals, events, the role and activities of the UN were discussed. Leading scientists and professors lecturing on international law from leading universities in the UK, who have received wide recognition in the academic community, took part as speakers on the Google Meet platform in an online format.

David Collins, a professor at City University of London, made a presentation on «The inclusion of the WTO in the Investment Facilitation for Development (IFD) Initiative».  

Berna Akcali Gur, Professor at Queen Mary University of London, made a presentation on the topic of «The UN Sustainable Development Goals, satellite broadband and WTO legislation».

Mary Mitsi, PhD, Senior Lecturer at Queen Mary University of London, touched upon the topic «Sustainable development in investment conditions and arbitration».

Associate Professor of KAZGUU named after M.S. Narikbayev Abai Abylayuly considered the topic «Should Kazakhstan join the multiparty arbitration appeal agreement?».

The discussion on the role of the WTO was continued by PhD students of the Department of International Law Tleubekov Sultan and Nurtaу Madina, master students Orazbek Bekarys and Ayatullah Nemati.

This discussion at the international level introduced deeper young scientists and all participants to the role of the WTO, the general characteristics, the relationship and scope of interaction between the WTO and the UN, arbitration, investment law, and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
