At Al-Farabi Kazakh National University on the basis of the Faculty of Geography and Environmental Sciences, 10 innovation laboratories have been opened to implement the Sustainable Development Goals

On the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the founding of the Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, the Scientific Center for Sustainable Development and Environmental Management (SD&EM) was opened on the basis of the university. The new research center includes 10 laboratories.

The work of the center is aimed at achieving the goals of the UN SDGs. The project is being implemented within the framework of the targeted financing program of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan “Sustainable development of natural-economic and socio-economic systems of the West Kazakhstan region in the context of green growth: comprehensive analysis, concept, forecast estimates and scenarios.”

The scientific center works in the field of climate and modeling, digital cartography and applied geodesy, GlobalSky (an innovative laboratory for atmospheric research), sustainable tourism, water resource quality analysis, geoinformation analysis of landscape degradation, geodetic and socio-economic research, environmental safety, soil ecology, monitoring environment and sustainable development.

The main task of the SD&EM center is to identify patterns of interaction between nature and society in the context of global environmental change, including the development and implementation of green technologies for the rational use of natural resources for the purpose of sustainable development of the regions of Kazakhstan.

Priority research includes: natural and anthropogenic dynamics of geosystems, soils, relief and landscapes, development of scientific foundations for nature conservation, regional features of sustainable development, geoinformation technologies and mapping.

The opening ceremony of the center was attended by: Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan Sayasat Nurbek, Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation Konstantin Mogilevsky, Chairman of the Board - Rector of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University Zhanseit Tuimebaev.

Guests also included: Rector of the National Nuclear Research University Vladimir Shevchenko, Vice-Rector of the Eurasian National University. L.N. Gumileva Lyazzat Nurkatova, Vice-Rector for International Affairs of St. Petersburg State University Sergey Andryushin, rectors of 50 universities in Russia and 40 universities in Kazakhstan.
