The International Scientific and Practical Conference “URBAN SUSTAINABILITY: CHALLENGES AND SOLUTIONS” was held at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University

On April 17-19, 2024, the International Scientific and Practical Conference “URBAN SUSTAINABILITY: CHALLENGES AND SOLUTIONS” was held at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, dedicated to the 90th anniversary of Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, within the framework of a scientific project of grant funding from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education Republic of Kazakhstan AR 19677682 “Comprehensive geographical assessment of sustainable development of large cities of the Republic of Kazakhstan”. The scientific manager of the project is Doctor of Geographical Sciences, Professor Gulnara Nyussupova.

The purpose of the conference is to exchange experience and research results: theories and practices of sustainable development of urban areas, taking into account modern challenges; analysis of problematic issues of sustainable urban development and search for effective ways to solve them; rational, careful and safe use of natural resources, as well as the exchange of research experience in all these areas of work.

The event was held in a hybrid mode at Al-Farabi Library of KazNU.

The conference brought together leading scientists and experts in the field of geography, sustainable development and urban planning from different countries, including the UK, Russia, Belarus and Kyrgyzstan, to discuss integrated approaches to the sustainable development of large cities in the Republic of Kazakhstan. Among the invited speakers are eminent professors and doctors of science from leading educational institutions and research institutes such as Dr., Associate Professor of the Sustainable Urban Development Program of the Faculty of Continuing Education at the University of Oxford Vlad Mikhnenko; Doctor of Geography, Professor, Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Director of the Institute of Geography and Water Security of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan Medeu Akhmetkal Rakhmetullayevich; Candidate of Geography, Associate Professor, Head of the Department of Regional Economics and Geography of the Peoples' Friendship University of Russia Kholina Veronika Nikolayevna; Doctor of Geography, Professor of the Department of Economic and Social Geography of the Belarusian State University Ekaterina Anatolyevna Antipova; Candidate of Geography, Associate Professor, Department of Economic and Social Geography, Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosova Makhrova Alla Georgiyevna; Doctor of Geography, Professor of the Kyrgyz Economic Research University Bobushev Temirbek Seitkaziyevich.

Conference participants had the opportunity to attend plenary sessions, breakout sessions, master classes and watch poster presentations.

The discussion program included topics related to the socio-economic aspects of sustainable development, the use of GIS technologies to study urban processes, as well as demography issues.

This event provided a unique platform for the exchange of knowledge and experience, contributing to the development of sustainable development strategies for cities and societies at large.
