The concept of the "University of the Third Age" or "Silver Universities" is a relatively new phenomenon for Kazakhstani society. These universities have been operating in many countries of the world for decades. The organisation of such courses in Kazakhstan reflects the aspiration to implement the concept of life-long learning.
The main goal of Silver Universities is to provide opportunities for older people to acquire new knowledge and skills, build self-confidence and actively participate in social life.
On 5 July 2024, as part of the Silver University programme, the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology held a session on "Weather Questions". The session covered questions about weather, the significance of studying the impact of climate change on human health and the main aspects of this problem, discussed the main aspects of health affected by these changes, as well as health risks and their distribution among different populations and regions. The main conclusions of the session were:
1. Climate changes are a serious challenge to human health. They can lead to an increased risk of various diseases, deterioration of air and water quality, and an increase in the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events.
2. Vulnerable groups need special protection - these are children, elderly people, people with chronic diseases and people with low socio-economic status and require special attention and support.
3. The need to take action to mitigate the health impacts of climate change, which includes reducing greenhouse gas emissions, developing adaptation measures to changing climate conditions, improving access to health care and building more resilient infrastructure.
